TRUCKERS' STRIKE * Greece - Protesters to confront government on economy

600 truck owners marched to the fair grounds to protest deregulation of their profession

Thessaloniki,Greece -AP/Associated Press, by NICHOLAS PAPHITIS -September 11, 2010: -- Greek unions are planning protest marches in the northern city of Thessaloniki against the debt-plagued country's harsh austerity program, before Prime Minister George Papandreou's keynote speech on the economy Saturday... A first taste of trouble came when an elderly man threw a shoe at Papandreou who had just inaugurated an annual trade fair. The projectile landed wide of its target, and police arrested the alleged shoe-thrower... Separately, around 600 truck owners marched to the fair grounds to protest deregulation of their profession... About 4,500 police were on duty to keep the peace at three bigger marches in the evening, as past protests have degenerated into riots... Truck drivers, protesting changes in licensing rules, caused serious fuel shortages during a July strike. Greece's Socialist government, battling a major financial crisis, is facing strong opposition from unions and professional groups over plans to relax rules in tightly-regulated professions)

* Greece - Truckers start new walkout

Attica,Greece -Ekathimerini -13 Sept 2010: -- Motorists waited in long lines outside gas stations in Attica and other cities yesterday after the union representing the country’s truck drivers said it would launch a new wave of strike action. Vehicle owners rushed to tank up on fuel fearing a repeat of an extended strike by truckers in July which froze deliveries to gas stations and caused them to run dry... Despite its reassurances, the government has little room for maneuver. Opening up so-called closed professions is part of a raft of reforms it has promised its creditors. Truck drivers worry that opening up their sector will result in the devaluation of their operating licenses... (Photo from ekathimerini)
