TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS * USA - Mack to Add 125 Workers at Pa. Truck Plant

Macungie,PA,USA -Transport Topics -24 Aug 2010: -- Mack Trucks said Tuesday will boost employment by 125 workers at its Macungie, Pa., truck assembly plant, starting in October... In addition to recalling laid-off workers, Mack anticipates it will hire new employees, although it is “too soon to say exactly how many,” it said in an e-mailed statement... Mack is the sister company of Volvo Trucks North America, which said last week it would recall 270 workers to its truck-building plant in Dublin, Va.... Both moves are to support increased production of Class 8 trucks, according to the two companies, units of Sweden’s Volvo AB...


* EPA, CARB to Review SCR Policies

Washington,DC/Sacramento,CAL, USA -Transport Topics -23 Aug 2010: -- The Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board have agreed to begin a “thorough review” of their policies regarding the operation of selective catalytic reduction-equipped heavy-duty diesel engines when diesel engine fluid tanks run dry... The review outlined in legal settlements disclosed in federal and state court documents filed earlier this month, are the result of lawsuits filed last year against EPA and CARB by engine maker Navistar Inc... Navistar is the only major engine manufacturer who is using exhaust gas recirculation technologies to reduce emissions in its 2010 engines... Navistar has alleged in court documents and public statements that when DEF tanks are empty, SCR engines do not shutdown as required, but continue to run even though their pollution system is no longer working properly to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions...
