TRUCKS MARKET * Philippines - Imports alarm truck makers

Manila,Philippines -Business Mirror, by Max V. de Leon -13 June 2010: -- Competition from imported cheaper used trucks is inundating local truck makers because trucks are freely importable goods, brand new or used, under the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules... The Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) believes there are ways to go around the multilateral trade ruling, such as the council looking at formulating an executive order to ban imports of used trucks... TMA chairman Frank M. Nacua said, also the executive director of the Philippine Automotive Federation Inc., said another way is for the council to recommend to Congress the passage of a law increasing the excise tax on imported secondhand trucks, similar to the practice in Vietnam, and the imposition of stricter regulations and standards for used trucks, including those on emission, roadworthiness and safety standards... Imported used trucks mostly come from Japan and eat up about 85 percent of the market, Nacua said... (Photo from en-derin: Jeepney Philippines Truck Art)
