TELEMATICS * Australia - Potential of in-vehicle telematics untapped
Ranging from satellite navigation systems to hand held computers, electronic diaries or cold store sensors, the potential of in-vehicle telematics has failed to be tapped
Sydney,NSW,Australia -ATN, by Anna Game-Lopata -June 15, 2010: ... So says the National Transport Commission (NTC) which has risen to the challenge by releasing a draft strategy aimed at promoting the national regulation of in-vehicle telematcs- or ‘smart technology’ used in the road freight sector... The NTC strategy, developed in consultation with government, unions and industry, aims to create an environment where ‘real time’ information can be routinely shared between parties in the supply chain to improve efficiencies... Despite the benefits of the technology, uptake has been slow among smaller companies. However, NTC Senior Manager Safety, Dr Jeff Potter, says consistent policy will provide the confidence smaller players need to make the required investment... Nevertheless, Potter maintains national regulation should facilitate in-vehicle telematics uptake for the broader benefit of the economy, society and the environment...
