* DC - After texting, DOT will target other distractions

Washington,DC,USA -Land Line Magazine, by David Tanner -June 22, 2010: ... Rose McMurray, chief safety officer for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said her agency is developing new rules that target a broader range of distractions... McMurray cited research showing that a driver sending or receiving a text message does not pay attention to the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. That’s more than enough time to encounter a hazard such as slowed or stopped traffic or a maneuver that requires quick reaction time... OOIDA filed comments asking FMCSA for clarification on the use of laptops and smart phones for navigation. Many small-business truckers use laptops or phones for navigation rather than purchasing stand-alone GPS devices. The Association is also asking for analysis and clarification on the role of fleet management systems such as Qualcomm pertaining to driver distraction... The Association has also posed concerns about driver privacy...


* Kansas - YRC to Sell Logistics Business to Equity Firm for $37 Million

Overland Park,KS,USA -Transport Topics -25 June 2010: -- YRC Worldwide said Friday it has entered into an agreement to sell a portion of its YRC Logistics business to a private equity firm for $37 million... Transition to new ownership under Austin Ventures is expected to be complete within the next 30 to 45 days, YRC said in a statement... YRC said the sale will form the basis for a new company specializing in international freight forwarding, customs brokerage, transportation management, truckload services and dedicated warehouse and fulfillment services in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia... * New York - Bill addresses efforts to restrict truck traffic

Albany,NY,USA -Land Line Magazine -June 22, 2010: -- A New York Senate panel has voted to advance a bill that would make it more difficult to restrict heavy trucks from roads in the Finger Lakes region of the state... The issue was setting aside plans to ban all local truck traffic on seven secondary roads in upstate New York... Shortly thereafter, bills offered at the statehouse were intended to avoid future showdowns on the issue. The Senate Transportation Committee has approved a bill that would require the NYSDOT to show a “demonstrated public safety hazard” before commercial vehicles could be restricted from state highways... The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association was among more than two dozen business groups in a coalition founded by the New York State Motor Truck Association to fight the proposed restriction...
