Cassidy -Apr 27, 2010: -- Trucking company FedEx Freight, which has pointedly rejected rail transport in the past, could switch and turn to intermodal in coming years if the price is right and customers want the option... The transportation industry is changing rapidly, and carriers must also be ready to change, Bill Logue, president of FedEx Freight, told shippers at the NASSTRAC annual meeting this week in Orlando, Fla. "Customers want options"... The less-than-truckload sister company of FedEx Express has characterized rail transport as inefficient and unwieldy for what it terms “fast-cycle logistics,” delivering freight next-day or second day up to 800 miles. The stance has put FedEx Freight on the opposite side of UPS, which has long been one of the largest customers in the rail industry for the longer linehaul portions of its domestic parcel network... Cassidy -May 3, 2010: -- YRC Worldwide is reaching deep into other modes of transportation as well as investment banking and corporate restructuring as its remakes its board of directors... Five of its nine directors will be replaced May 11 as part of a restructuring required by last year’s labor agreement and YRC Worldwide’s recent debt-for-equity swap... An additional director, Carl Vogt, will retire when the Teamsters union nominates someone to replace him on the board, the company said... One of the new board members is a vice president at AMR, the parent of American Airlines. Others have experience with Atlas Air Holdings, American Commercial Lines and Delta Air Lines... William D. Zollars will remain chairman of the board, as well as CEO and president of the company...

Fleet Owner -May 3, 2010: -- Data mining software company Vigillo has announced that more than 500,000 drivers at over 1,300 carriers are now using its CSA 2010 carrier and driver scorecard... The scorecard offers a look at the safety data the FMCSA will use in the implementation of the CSA 2010 initiative, which replaces the SafeStat program beginning in November. It uses the same algorithms and methodologies as FMCSA, giving fleets an advanced peek at what their operations will look like under the program, according to the company...


* California - Trucking industry resulted in costs of $480 million over 8-year period

Sacramento,CAL,USA -Risk & Insurance -5 May 2010: -- The trucking industry in California accounted for more than $480 million in workers' compensation medical and indemnity payments from accident year 2000 to 2008, according to a recent analysis... The California Workers' Compensation Institute report was based on an analysis of more than 23,000 workplace injury claims filed by employees in the state's trucking sector. The trucking industry includes 173 different job categories, including clerical office employees and warehousemen, but is dominated by workers who transport goods by truck. Researchers said these workers accounted for about 83 percent of the claims and nearly 87 percent of the losses during the study period...
