SAFETY BLITZ * Australia - Truckies take a rock and road trip ...
...with CDs of 80s music with safety messages
Sydney,NSW,Australia -The Daily Telegraph/The Herald Sun -May 05, 2010: ... It seems 80s rock heroes are being used in a bid to cut road deaths among heavy vehicle drivers after truck drivers have been given free CDS of their songs interspersed with safety messages... It is hoped the music of Jimmy Barnes, Johnny Diesel, Bryan Ferry and Europe songs will help reduce the 37 trucks fatalities this year, compared to 21 at the same time last year... Although it is unclear how many of the 37 trucks this year are at fault, the NSW Government will today launch the campaign aimed at driver fatigue to improve road safety... There will also be a blitz of more than 80 heavy vehicle depots by WorkCover to protect the state's 154,438 registered heavy vehicle drivers from being overworked. Police Minister, Michael Daley, said the two-pronged approach would target driver fatigue... Central Coast truck driver Sam Catena said drivers needed more than music to drive safer... "Ultimately it comes down to how long we are out on the road and that is up to the companies that employ us," he said...
