DRIVERS' LICENSE * Australia - Call for amendment to heavy vehicle licensing

Canberra,Australia -Lloyds List DCN, by Sineva Toevai —Mar 15, 2010: -- The trucking industry will face a skills shortage if Australia's transport ministers fail to relax the existing licensing system, the Australian Trucking Association says... At present, drivers must hold a car license for two years before applying for a heavy-rigid license and then wait another 12 months before they are eligible to apply for a semi-trailer license... The trucking industry representative body would like to see the "time-served' licensing model amended to speed up the time new entrants can qualify for jobs... Under ATA’s proposal, heavy-rigid license holders would be able to drive semi-trailers by holding their existing license for six months instead of 12 months, completing a semi-trailer course at a registered training institution and completing a log book for a specified period...
