Hensley & Jim Walsh -Mar. 14, 2010: -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety's commitment to patrolling for traffic violators is designed to increase highway safety, but critics say it comes at the expense of another key safety task: hunting for unsafe trucks... Lt. Col., Jack Hegarty, issued an order last month telling highway patrol officers in the DPS commercial-vehicle unit that they could no longer make "administrative stops"... Highway patrol officers in a majority of states use the stops, which do not require probable cause, to pull over commercial trucks and check driver hours and log books for signs of safety violations...
