DRIVERS' LICENSE * Australia - Call for amendment to heavy vehicle licensing

Canberra,Australia -Lloyds List DCN, by Sineva Toevai —Mar 15, 2010: -- The trucking industry will face a skills shortage if Australia's transport ministers fail to relax the existing licensing system, the Australian Trucking Association says... At present, drivers must hold a car license for two years before applying for a heavy-rigid license and then wait another 12 months before they are eligible to apply for a semi-trailer license... The trucking industry representative body would like to see the "time-served' licensing model amended to speed up the time new entrants can qualify for jobs... Under ATA’s proposal, heavy-rigid license holders would be able to drive semi-trailers by holding their existing license for six months instead of 12 months, completing a semi-trailer course at a registered training institution and completing a log book for a specified period... EX-TRUCKERS * Canada - 154 truckers lose licenses in British Columbia

In British Columbia, 154 truck drivers have been stripped of their commercial licenses following an investigation into forged documents

BC,Canada -The Globe and Mail/Land Line Magazine -June 9, 2008: -- ... Some of the truckers allegedly used fake letters that claimed they had extensive driving experience in their home country and therefore didn’t need a new license from the province. Driver’s License * USA - For undocumented immigrants in NY

New York license plan will include undocumented immigrants

NY,USA -The Associated Press/Land Line Magazine -29 Oct 2007: -- New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer says his state will have “the most secure licensing system in the nation,” now that the department of U.S. Homeland Security has signed off on the plan... The state will actually have three different driver’s licenses:
* One is a so-called “enhanced” license that will be as secure as a passport and will satisfy customs requirements at the United States’ international borders.
* Another will be a version that complies with federal Real ID standards, which make it harder to get a fake version.
* And the last will be a driver’s license for undocumented immigrants, which will allow them to drive but will not serve as a valid federal ID.

CDL * USA - California officials look into new, tougher driving tests

More extensive tests should be used to evaluate a driver’s memory, reflexes and vision to identify people who shouldn’t be behind the wheel

CAL,USA -Land Line Magazine -October 12, 2007: -- Obtaining a California driver’s license soon could become more difficult... The tests, which would be carried out by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, still could be years away... By 2010 the agency expects to reach preliminary conclusions from a pilot program now under way... The first test would check for obvious physical limitations, such as an inability to walk to the license renewal counter without assistance... An eye test would also be given, with the eye chart’s letters fading from black to light gray on a white background. It is intended to help indicate whether a driver might not easily see a light-colored vehicle in fog or a dark vehicle in the shade, the Times reported... A separate test would require drivers to write down their Social Security numbers or ZIP codes from memory... Failure to pass any of the tests could result in another exam to check reflexes... Drivers also could be required to take road tests... Licenses could only be revoked for failing the road test. A last resort to avoid license revocation would be to allow drivers to test their driving skills on roads near their residences. Passage of the test would authorize the driver to receive a restricted license allowing them to drive solely in that area.
