ANALYSIS * TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS WORLDWIDE
Looking back over a decade - and at prospects for 2010
London,UK -Transport Intelligence, by Thomas Cullen -4 Jan 2010: -- December 31, 2009, marked not just the end of a year but also the conclusion of a decade – a decade that saw the transformation of the logistics sector if not beyond recognition, then into a much more sophisticated and high-profile area of business in all advanced economies and many developing countries... The shipping sector probably experienced the biggest changes. Container shipping was thrust into the centre of the world's economy as a result of globalisation... In contrast, air freight appears to have managed an aggressive project of capacity reduction. Like shipping, aviation will see an enormous level of consolidation in the near future... Surprisingly, road freight saw consolidation in many Western markets over the past decade. FedEx has continued to grab LTL (less than truck load) market share in North America, while Kuehne + Nagel and Deutsche Bahn have maintained their acquisition programmes in Western Europe. A sector as huge as road freight is unlikely to ever be dominated by a few big players, yet the consolidation in areas such as LTL will probably continue, expanding geographically as well as deepening within national markets... Consequently, it is a safe prediction for 2010 that there will be extensive restructuring and bankruptcy amongst logistics companies, with markets continuing to undergo profound change. Indeed, this change will be at least as great as that seen over the past decade... (Picture from joc: oiltanker dazzy1960)
