* Sweden - How to drive a truck economically with Volvo's: Boije Ovebrink! get energy, keep energy ... and ditch the bling!
Gothenburg,Sweden -BigLorryBlog (UK) -September 15, 2009: -- Truck Biglorryblog is impressed by how the truck makers are increasingly using YouTube to market their wares and get their message over. This one is from Volvo and shows Swedish trucking personality, Boije Ovebrink, displaying his skills in fuel-efficient driving at the Gothenburg demo track. BLB heartily endorses Boije's advice which is basically to utilise the truck's kinetic energy as much as possible - in shot get it rolling, keep it rolling. The only thing I'd add is that it's all very well having 'Elk-Catcher's on the front of you truck in Sweden but just remember when it comes to having all those extra spotlights, roobars, airhorns and folderolls on a truck they all create drag - and if you want to achieve the ultimate in fuel economy then you'd better ditch the bling.../span>
* Sweden - Volvo truck shipments down 52 percent in August
Stockholm,Sweden -Reuters, By Niklas Pollard & Jens Hansegard -Sept 15, 2009: -- World number two truck maker Volvo said on Tuesday truck deliveries fell 52 percent year-on-year in August as markets across the globe remained mired by the economic downturn... Fall in shipments slightly less steep than in July... Volvo, which sells trucks under brands such as Renault, Nissan Diesel and Mack as well as its own name, said deliveries were down 72 percent in Europe, its biggest market, while they fell 33 percent in North America and 43 percent in Asia... * China - Truck sales taking off
Beijing,China -Fleet Owner (USA), by Brian Straight -Sep 16, 2009: -- Buoyed by nearly $1.3 trillion of stimulus money, the Chinese economy is starting to recover, and recover quickly, from the global recession. GDP for the country jumped 7.9% year over year, far outpacing what analysts expected... And truck sales are along for the ride. A new report by ACT Research in combination with China’s State Information Center indicates second quarter medium- and heavy-duty truck sales climbing 67% in 2009 over the second quarter of 2008... In the second quarter of 2008, China implemented more stringent emissions requirements, spurring a pre-buy in the first half of the year, Vieth said. In the second quarter of 2008, China saw sales of 288,100 vehicles before the economy’s troubles worsened. In the third quarter, the number dropped to 140,000 and even further to 113,000 in the fourth quarter before rebounding slightly in the first quarter of this year to 143,000... Still, with sales of 239,000 in the second quarter, it appears the market is booming...
* Brazil - Workers Strike At One Of GM's Assembly Lines
Sao Paulo,Brazil -Dow Jones/The Wall Street Journal (USA) -16 Sept 2009: ... Around 4,000 metal workers from Sao Jose dos Campos are asking for salary increases... Similar workers at General Motors do Brasil Ltda.'s main facilities in the so-called ABC automotive capital region of Sao Paulo received a 6.5% salary increase, including inflation, on Monday... Autoworkers from nearly all of the big car makers have been on strike at one point over the last five days to discuss salary increases... Only Fiat, based in another state, has been spared so far from strikes on its assembly line. Fiat is Brazil's No. 1 car and truck maker...
