Family-owned firms still healthy, despite recession
Cherry Hill,NJ,USA -The NJ Bizz, by Shankar P. -14 Sept 2009: -- Among the Northeastern states, New Jersey is so trucking friendly that a manufacturer of these vehicles has relocated its regional office from Pennsylvania to Cherry Hill... Phillip Rulli, vice president of the northeast region for Navistar International Corp., based in Warrenville, Ill., said large, family-owned trucking companies in New Jersey are expanding their fleets and growing revenue in the recession, unlike their regional counterparts... Rulli moved his operations to South Jersey “to better serve this growing market,” which includes NFI (formerly National Freight Industries), of Vineland; Hermann Services Inc., of Dayton; and The Shevell Group, of Elizabeth, and its transportation firm, New England Motor Freight Inc., Rulli said... A glance at his order book tells Rulli these clients are growing, or at least holding their own; he’s spent the past three decades selling trucks in this market, and has seen firsthand which companies have grown by adding turnkey freight services and picking up plum accounts from rivals that have either folded or shuttered...
* US Customs outlines C-TPAT enforcement and appeal rules
Washington,DC,USA -Today's Trucking -15 Sept 2009: -- U.S. Customs and Border protection says it will take a hard line against carriers or shippers and immediately remove those who don't comply with the program’s minimum security criteria... With a "trust but verify" focus in mind, C-TPAT members are generally afforded reduced inspections in exchange for adopting stronger security practices in the supply chain... Companies that are suspended or removed may appeal this decision to CBP headquarters. Appeals should include all relevant information which demonstrates how the company has addressed the issues which resulted in the suspension or removal, or provide corrected factual information in the case where a company claims that a mistake of fact or other misunderstanding has resulted in the suspension or removal...
