* China - Caterpillar, Navistar eye China truck JV - source
Shanghai,China -Reuters, by Fang Yan & Jacqueline Wong -Aug 21, 2009: -- Caterpillar Inc and Navistar International Corp are in talks with China's Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co to set up a truck venture in the country, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday... "The parties have basically agreed on the framework for a 50-50 venture to make heavy trucks and engines, but have yet to iron out the details," the source said... A Jianghuai spokesman declined to comment, while Caterpillar and Navistar executives could not be reached immediately... Analysts said the JV, to be hopefully concluded before the end of the year, will give the U.S. industrial giants a chance to tap the potential of China's heavy truck segment, which is getting a lift from Beijing's economic stimulus package... Heavy truck sales in China rose 11.75 percent to 541,256 units in 2008, more than double the level in 2003, according to data provided by Nomura Securities...
* Sweden - Volvo Trucks marks 50 years of its three-point safety belt
Stockholm,Sweden -Refrigerated Transport (USA) -Aug 19, 2009: -- This year, it is 50 years since Volvo introduced the three-point safety belt... However, although the three-point belt has been around for half a century, its use is still worryingly low among truck drivers in some countries. On Swedish roads, only four out of 10 truck drivers use the belt, while France, owing to tough legislation, has boosted safety belt use to 80%... Consequences of not using the belt are well-documented in Volvo Trucks’ own accident research. Of 15 truck driver fatalities on Swedish roads over the past three years, for instance, only one was wearing a safety belt... * USA - Mack Receives Military Truck Orders
Lehigh Valley,PA,USA -Transport Topics -19 Aug 2009: --Mack Trucks has received an order for 18 more of its Vision Elite model tractors from the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command... Mack, said Aug. 4 that the order is valued at $2.4 million and includes 35-ton lowboy trailers for each tractor... The order is the second to be placed by TACOM — the Tank-automotive and Armaments Command — as part of a three-year, $28.5 million contract that calls for a total of 152 Vision Elite models, Mack said... Lehigh Valley,PA,USA -Today's Trucking -19 Aug 2009: -- A new era began on Aug. 13, when the first Mack Pinnacle tractor came off the production line at the Macungie Assembly Operations in Pennsylvania... Macungie already produces the Mack Granite, Mack TerraPro and Titan by Mack models, and with this addition the facility now assembles the complete lineup of Mack heavy-duty trucks... To commemorate the start of Mack highway truck production at Macungie, the first 1,000 Pinnacle models built there will be adorned with special Mack Bulldog decals on their hoods... * USA - Navistar hybrids pass 5-million-mile mark
FL,USA -Fleet Owner -Aug 19, 2009: -- As more and more fleets join the hybrid movement, Navistar has announced it has become the first original equipment manufacturer to have its hybrid vehicles accumulate 5 million miles of real-world driving... Through its International trucks and IC Bus brands, Navistar says it is expanding its activities in that area. The company recently received a $39 million federal grant to develop all-electric delivery vehicles and has said it will build 400 of the zero-emissions vehicles in 2010, primarily for local deliveries companies where stop-and-go driving is an essential part of the operation... Navistar’s hybrid lineup includes the Class 6 International DuraStar Hybrid, the Class 7 DuraStar Hybrid tractor and the Class 7 WorkStar Hybrid 4x4...
