TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA - Who will win if YRC fails?
Overland Park,KNS,USA -AP (New York,NY)-18 Aug 2009: -- An RBC analyst said Monday less-than-truckload carriers have a tough road ahead, and that road is likely even worse for the biggest company in the sector... Less-than-truckload are carriers that take freight from a variety of sources, sort and redistribute it at terminals along their route. Truckload carriers take freight directly from one shipper to a receiver... Barnes issued an "Underperform" rating on troubled trucking company YRC Worldwide Inc., the country's largest trucking company. YRC has lost customers as many fear the company might still file for bankruptcy, despite many drastic cost-saving measures... Barnes also gave an "Underperform" rating to Arkansas Best Corp., saying its pension liabilities and unionized work force might make it less attractive to customers leaving YRC. But if YRC does fail, Barnes thinks that Arkansas Best will still capture a sizable amount of business... Two other LTL carriers, Con-way Inc. and Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. are best-positioned to benefit if YRC files for bankruptcy protection, Barnes said. He gave them both "Outperform" ratings...
* USA - Trucking failures drop in 2nd quarter
New York,NY,USA -eTrucker, by Avery Vise -19 Aug 2009: -- Despite a lingering recession, weak freight volumes and fuel prices that were rising once again, the number of trucking companies with five or more power units that failed in the second quarter of this year was the lowest in more than two years, according to a leading industry analyst... The latest failures report from Donald Broughton, senior research analyst for Avondale Partners, estimates 370 carriers failed in the second quarter, down sharply from both the first quarter of this year and the second quarter of 2008. The average size of failed companies was 18 trucks. Both the number of failures and the average size were at their lowest level since the first quarter of 2007, Broughton reports... The number of trucks being pulled from the road is less than 15 percent of last year's second-quarter rate, Broughton says...
* Calif. port trucks to register by Sept. 30
Los Angeles,CAL,USA -eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -19 Aug 2009: -- Trucks visiting California ports must register in the Drayage Truck Registry by Sept. 30... A Phase 1 compliance extension application must be filed with the California Air Resources Board or postmarked by Sept. 30. This extension is available to trucks with 1994-2003 model year engines for which there is no verified CARB-approved Level 3 control technology... Registration and truck labels are free of charge; labels are optional...
