STRIKE * India - Truckers stay away from July 24 strike

Kolkata,India -The Times of India -21 July 2009: -- Truck operators will not join the indefinite strike call given by Banijjik Paribahan Bachao Committee (Save Commercial Transport Committee). This will come as a relief to Kolkatans who face a tough time from July 24 when private buses and taxis will go off the roads in protest against the government's drive to phase out old vehicles... Goods carrier organizations are part of the committee that called on the strike, but on Monday truck operators held a meeting and decided to give the government more time to consider their demands... The federation of West Bengal Truck Operators Association will meet on July 28 to decide on its next course of action... The truckers demand an extension of the phase-out period and a financial package for new vehicles... The government has issued a notification to ban pre-93 commercial vehicles in a bid to clean up the city's air. But transport operators have gone on the warpath against this green drive, insisting that the government enforce stricter emission norms rather than scrapping old vehicles. The committee a forum of 17 transport bodies of the state sprung a surprise on the government late on Sunday night by announcing an indefinite strike from July 24...
