TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA - Charlotte project converts FedEx trucks to hybrids

Memphis,TENN,USA -The Charlotte Business Journal -July 21, 2009: -- FedEx Corp. has added 92 hybrid-electric trucks to its delivery fleet. The trucks were converted into hybrid vehicles in Charlotte over the past six months, creating 50 temporary jobs in the area... FedEx developed the hybrids with Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. and Eaton Corp., which provided the hybrid-electric systems... The project boosts FedEx’s fleet of hybrid-electric vehicles by more than 50 percent to 264... The newly retrofitted delivery trucks will be placed into service in California, primarily in the Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco metropolitan areas... * Virginia adds truck parking to offset 18 rest area closures

VA,USA -Land Line Magazine -July 21, 2009: -- Finding a place to park in Virginia may be a little trickier with the closure of 18 rest areas – but the state says some changes were made so truck parking overall in the state did not take a hit... The Virginia Department of Transportation made short work of closing 18 of the state’s 42 rest areas starting late in the day Monday, July 20, and finishing up the task by the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 21... The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has been critical of VDOT’s closure plan, highlighting the dilemma that truck drivers face in finding appropriate, safe parking facilities in order to comply with hours of service regulations... OOIDA’s efforts, along with those of its members, mitigated the damage VDOT’s plan could have had on truck parking...


* Old Dominion’s Second-Quarter Profit Declines

Thomasville,NC,USA -Transport Topics -22 July 2009: -- Old Dominion Freight Line said Wednesday its second-quarter profit fell to $10.7 million, or 29 cents per share, from $23.9 million, or 64 cents, a year ago... Revenue fell to $316.2 million, from $417.8 million a year ago, the less-than-truckload carrier said in a statement...


* Knight’s 2Q Income Flat from a Year Ago

Truckload carrier Knight Transportation’s second-quarter profit was about even with a year ago at $12.6 million, or 15 cents a share, compared with last year’s $12.7 million, or 15 cents per share... Revenue fell to $162.1 million, from $206.1 million a year ago, the company said late Wednesday. Revenue excluding fuel surcharges fell 6.8% to $144.3 million...


* Hub Group’s 2Q Income Drops

Downers Grove, IL,.USA -Transport Topics -22 July 2009: -- Hub Group Inc. said late Wednesday its second-quarter net income fell to $8.3 million, or 22 cents a share, from $15 million, or 40 cents, a year ago... Revenue fell 26% to $363 million, said the company, which also has third-party logistics and freight brokerage operations... Hub Group attributed the decline to a 10% volume decrease and an 18% decrease related primarily to fuel...


* Arkansas Best Reports 2Q Loss

Fort Smith,ARK,USA -Transport Topics -22 July 2009: -- Arkansas Best Corp. reported a second-quarter loss of $15.4 million, or 62 cents a share, compared with a profit of $16.2 million, or 63 cents, a year ago... The loss follows an $18.2 million first-quarter loss. Revenue fell to $362.7 million from $498.5 million a year ago, a per-day decline of 26.7%, the company said Wednesday... Less-than-truckload unit ABF Freight System had an operating loss of $26.8 million compared with operating income of $25.5 million a year ago...
