STRIKE * India - Truckers stay away from July 24 strike

Kolkata,India -The Times of India -21 July 2009: -- Truck operators will not join the indefinite strike call given by Banijjik Paribahan Bachao Committee (Save Commercial Transport Committee). This will come as a relief to Kolkatans who face a tough time from July 24 when private buses and taxis will go off the roads in protest against the government's drive to phase out old vehicles... Goods carrier organizations are part of the committee that called on the strike, but on Monday truck operators held a meeting and decided to give the government more time to consider their demands... The federation of West Bengal Truck Operators Association will meet on July 28 to decide on its next course of action... The truckers demand an extension of the phase-out period and a financial package for new vehicles... The government has issued a notification to ban pre-93 commercial vehicles in a bid to clean up the city's air. But transport operators have gone on the warpath against this green drive, insisting that the government enforce stricter emission norms rather than scrapping old vehicles. The committee a forum of 17 transport bodies of the state sprung a surprise on the government late on Sunday night by announcing an indefinite strike from July 24... STRIKE * Australia - Albanese joins chorus criticising trucking shutdown

Sydney,Australia -The Supply Chain Review -July 25, 2008: -- Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Anthony Albanese has broken his silence on the impending truck shutdown, criticising the organisers and questioning their motives... He has questioned the demands of the Australian Long Distance Owner Drivers Association (ALDODA) and Mick Pattel, who are campaigning for changes to the fuel excise and an end to fatigue laws respectively... He says stopping work and threatening the supply of goods to supermarkets will not help the shutdown advocates, and demanding the "wind back of any fatigue laws" raises questions of their position on safety...

STRIKE * Australia - Food supplies to be halted by rogue truck drivers

Truck drivers are planning a nationwide two-week strike that could limit the supply of food and fuel

Sydney,Queensland,Australia -AFN, by Daniel Palmer -July 21, 2008: -- ... Requesting better pay and conditions, the organisers, led by the Australian Long Distance Owners’ and Drivers’ Association, are asking truck drivers to strike for two weeks from July 28... One of the transport company owners, Peter Schuback of Queensland’s Hervey Bay, said that the stoppage would highlight the impact the economy would be subjected to if the industry was to collapse. “On day three of the stoppage shops will run out of food, on day four service stations will run out of petrol, on day five we will run out of [drinkable] water … and on day 10 industry will shut down because there will be no power,” Mr Schuback told the Sydney Morning Herald... Organisers of the strike have been spreading the message to the nations truck drivers via text messages... The leading industry body for the trucking industry, the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), has also distanced themselves from the proposed stoppage in the belief that it will provide no benefit to the industry... While the organisers claim that 80 per cent will strike, the ATA disputes this and suggest that disruptions will not be significant...

STRIKE * USA - Independent Truckers Stage Wildcat Strike At Port

A group of about 50 independent truckers abandoned their vehicles Tuesday, staging the second day of a wildcat strike at the busy Port Of Oakland in protest over rising diesel fuel costs

Oakland,CAL,USA -KTVU -May 6, 2008: -- ... Authorities said the second day of the strike began with an act of violence -- a trucker was arrested on vandalism charges after he allegedly tossed a rock at a trucker who was not honoring the picket line... Independent truckers are frustrated and angry over not being properly reimbursed by shipping companies for the steep rise in diesel fuel costs... According to the drivers, the companies that dispatch the drivers to carry cargo had agreed years ago to pay them 5 percent of their fuel costs above $2 per gallon annually. However, many of the angry strikers said those agreement have not been enforced... With the price of diesel soaring, drivers claim without the payments they are going broke. "We are paying more than we make," said a driver who did not want to be named... STRIKE * Denmark - Danish Truckers Block Ports, Bridges

Danish truck drivers blocked ports, tunnels and bridges on Monday, disrupting transport between Denmark and neighboring countries to protest fines imposed on drivers who violate EU regulations on working hours

Copenhagen,Denmark -Associated Press/The Houston Chronicle (Houston,TX,USA) -Nov. 5, 2007: -- ... The blockade by hundreds of drivers caused long lines of trucks at the bridge-and-tunnel link to Sweden as well as at the bridges connecting Denmark's biggest islands... The blockade, which started Sunday, affected only commercial transport, not private motorists or buses, police said... The truck drivers are protesting fines imposed on them if they violate European Union-mandated limits on working hours. Under EU rules introduced in April, drivers must take a total of 45 minutes rest for every 4 1/2 hours of driving, and the maximum daily driving length must not exceed nine hours... Drivers are fined 100 kroner ($20) for each percent that their driving time exceeds the limit...

TRUCK OWNERS STRIKE * India - Goods vehicles will be confiscated, says Collector

In view of the indefinite strike...
Thiruvananthapuram,Kerala,India -The Hindu (Chennai,India) -21 Oct 2007: -- The District Administration today said it will confiscate cargo vehicles, if need be, to prevent any disruption of supply of essential commodities in view of the ongoing indefinite strike by truck owners... District Collector N. Ayyppan said the government will invoke the provisions of the Requisition and Acquisition of Property Act, 1981, for such emergency measures... He said the district administration had taken steps to ensure the supply of vegetables, fuel, cooking gas and other essential commodities in view of the indefinite strike...

STRIKE * Greece - Truckers go back to work after two-day stop

Greek truck drivers ended a two-day strike Friday, after protesters had parked their vehicles along a section of Greece's busiest highway, disrupting traffic

Athens,Greece -The Associated Press -19 Oct 2007: -- ... Fuel truck drivers launched the strike Thursday to protest government plans to loosen job restrictions in the sector, opening the jobs to more competition. Other truckers have joined the protest in solidarity... Their union said it had suspended its action after opening talks with Greece's Development Ministry... The protest has not led to any fuel shortages or affected overseas-based trucks traveling through Greece...

The rule of law should be applied firmly against independent container haulers who could be planning another massive strike at B.C.'s Lower Mainland ports, says the president of the B.C. Trucking Association

Vancouver,BC,Canada -Today's Trucking -30 July 2007: -- Responding to a warning from BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair that owner-operators could go on strike once again if their demands aren't met, Paul Landry said no independent worker has the right to "prevent others from earning a living or to impair Canada’s competitive advantage"... "Unionization of workers and legal strikes within the context of collective agreements are recognized legitimate processes … "Container owner-operators are not employees or workers in the normal sense. They are independent contractors or small businesspeople who own and operate their own trucks. They contract themselves and their tractors to trucking companies, maintain and pay the expenses for their vehicles, enjoy the taxation benefits of a small business and decide when and where they are going to work."
