Safety * USA - A priority for trucking industry

2008 was state's safest year since World War II

Ashwaubenon,WIS,USA -The Green Bay Press Gazette, by Nathan Phelps -July 12, 2009: -- For Rick Blaser, a driver with Ashwaubenon-based Schneider National, safety is as much about what he is doing as it is watching other motorists on the road... "You're looking out quite a distance down the road and looking at what cars are doing, how they're moving in the lanes and maintaining a cushion of a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you," the Suamico resident said Wednesday prior to heading out on the road. "You're always monitoring the traffic ahead to know what it's doing so you know what's going to happen before you have to react to it."... Transportation companies and trade organizations have moved safety to the forefront, pointing to both a moral obligation and a financial bottom-line... While a number of factors came into play last year, one of the key organizations in the trucking industry pointed out earlier this month the number of truck-involved traffic fatalities declined 12 percent in 2008, dropping from 4,822 in 2007 to 4,229...
