INFRASTRUCTURES * Australia - Extra $200m funding given to local councils for roads

The Federal Government has announced it will provide an extra $200 million to local councils across the country to spend on improving their roads

Canberra,Australia -Road Transport Freight News -10 July 2009: -- In announcing the extra funding, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese, said it is important to ensure roads maintained by councils are maintained to ensure national productivity does not fall... He said the government understands the importance of the funding particularly for rural and regional councils, where the funds can often compromise over half of the council’s revenue... The grants were recommended to the Government by the various state’s Local Government Grants Commission and will be followed by other grants...


* Boost for Tasmanian trucking route as part of joint-government agreement

Canberra,Australia -Road Freight News -9 July 2009: -- The north-south trucking route between Burnie and Hobart in Tasmania will be receiving a boost as part of a joint-government agreement to spend $3 million upgrading the passage... Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese, said the improvements are vital to ensuring heavy vehicle safety and maintaining the major freight corridor... Funding will also be given to bridges on the Midland and Bass highways, including the Macquarie River Bridge, Emu River Bridge, Meander River Bridge and Blythe River Bridge...
