DANGEROUS TRUCKERS * Vietnam - Residents fed up with dangerous dump trucks

Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province,Vietnam -Thanh Nien News -July 6, 2009: -- Local residents in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province say they are growing increasingly disturbed by an endless stream of oversized dump trucks speeding dangerously along a stretch of National Highway No.51... Last month, a dump truck crashed into a car in the area, killing one person and seriously injuring the three others in the vehicle. The collision thrust the car 40 meters down the road where it crashed into two other trucks traveling in the opposite direction. The 22-year-old truck driver, Tran Minh Duc, was later found to have been speeding and driving recklessly... A day earlier, 29-year-old Tong Van Binh drove his dump truck into a motorcycle, killing two adults on the bike and injuring a 12-year-old boy... Transport trucks cause four to five traffic accidents each month in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, according to Commander, Dinh Cong Tien, of the provincial traffic police department... The vehicles are usually overloaded while the drivers operate the trucks carelessly, Tien added... In May and June, residents turned up the pressure on police to put a stop to the dangerous driving, and even began pulling trucks over themselves to tell the drivers to be more careful. However, several indignant truck drivers reportedly then called on more trucks to come and block traffic, pressuring the residents to let them go...
