VIP * USA - Three possibly sweet letters to older truck owners

Some things are worth more dead than alive

Contra Costa,CA,USA -The Contra Costa Times, by Mediha Fejzagic DiMartino -1 June 2009: -- Old semi trucks may fetch as much as $35,000 if replaced by a newer lower-emission model... Voucher Incentive Program provides grant money for the truck owners to replace their 1993 and older, possibly high-polluting vehicles, with 2007 or newer, lower-emission vehicles... This year, those replacing a vehicle with gross weight greater than 60,000 pounds and made in 1990 or older will receive $35,000. Those replacing a 1991-1993 vehicle will receive $5,000 less... A newer semi truck costs anywhere from $70,000 to $180,000... The old truck will be destroyed and owner will be responsible for the remaining cost of the new vehicle... Trucker Robert Keffer understands benefits of modern technology. "They say that the air coming out of these new engines is cleaner than the air coming in," Keffer said. But getting rid of his Kenworth Cabover 1992 semi truck would be hard. There is a bond, he said. A similar model was used in filming of the "B.J. and the Bear" show he watched as a child. It's also his office, his paycheck, his home... "This is not just a job," he said. "This truck is what I do. Eventually, people will buy new equipment, but they want it to happen right now."...
