Brockville,ONT,CAN -The Ottawa Sun, by NICK GARDINER -1 June 2009: -- Denis Boudreau anticipates no problem entering the U.S. when new visitor requirements take effect early this morning... The eight-year truck driver from Ottawa is armed with a passport and second-generation FAST card that speeds access for trusted visitors and commercial carriers... "We suspect there could be lineups Monday," said Dean, who added: "It's our hope that will not happen."... Even one truck in the FAST lane dedicated to carriers can cause a backup if the driver doesn't have an updated card, said Dean... And if individuals in the car lanes don't have the documentation, a lengthy lineup could block access to the FAST lane for truckers who do have their papers in order, he said...

* BCTA lobbies to keep border crossing open to trucks

Aldergrove,B.C.,CAN -Today's Trucking -1 June 2009: -- If Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) has its way, no more trucks will cross into the U.S. at Aldergrove, B.C.... According to radio station News1130, Aldergrove is the 12th busiest border crossing in Canada and about 100,000 commercial trucks use the route to cross the Canada/U.S. border per year... The CBSA says Aldergrove is not equipped with the proper security checks to detect illegal activity in commercial trucks, and would like the traffic diverted to the Pacific Highway crossing... Paul Landry, president and CEO of the B.C. Trucking Association, is firmly against the closure of Aldergrove to trucks and says, "closing that crossing will add costs for the industry, will cause delays, and of course when you think about it from a climate standpoint, trucks travelling extra distances to go across other border crossings will only add to greenhouse gases and smog emissions."... The two sides are expected to meet on the issue later this week... (News1130 photo)
