* Germany - Daimler loses faith in India truck story. Scales down production target by 91% for first year
Stuttgart,Germany -My Digital FC, by Nikhil Gulati ((New Delhi,India) -Jun 1, 2009: -- Daimler’s much hyped entry in India to make trucks is turning out to be a whimper. The German company, the world’s biggest truck maker, intends to make only 6,000 trucks a year by 2011-12, according to vendors... This is less than a tenth of a production plan of 70,000 trucks a year it had announced in April when it decided to go it alone after the joint venture partner, the Hero group, walked out. At the time, Hero cited bad economic conditions -- the same reason which appears to have now forced Daimler to scale down its India ambitions... Daimler had then said its India plans were intact and it was committed to investing 700 million euros (about Rs 4,500 crore) in four years. Auto component suppliers to the project say the factory site in Chennai is still just a patch of land and work has yet to start there... Admitting delays, Uta Leitner, Daimler’s global spokesperson at Stuttgart, Germany, reiterated the company’s commitment to India. She gave no details of the production plans or a time frame...
