Mexican Truckers * USA - File $6 billion Claim Against U.S.
Already in a fiscal crisis, facing trillion dollar budget shortfalls for years to come and increasingly hostile creditors, the U.S.’s wallet could soon be $6 billion lighter due to the North American Free Trade Agreement
Dublin,OH,USA -Economy in Crisis, by Dustin Ensinger -2 June 2009: -- Roughly 4,500 Mexican trucking companies, backed by Mexico’s National Cargo Transportation Association, are suing the U.S. government over its ban of Mexican truckers on U.S. roadways... NAFTA allows companies - even foreign ones - to sue the governments of any of the three signatory nations if they feel that the policies the countries implement are unfair to their business interests. According to the poorly negotiated trade accord, Mexican truckers were to be given full access to U.S. roadways by 1995... According to Bloomberg News participation has been less than stellar due to political uncertainty. Thus far, only 27 Mexican- based companies and 104 trucks are registered to operate in the program... As a result, the Mexican government levied $2.4 billion worth of tariffs on 90 U.S. exports... Not only are Mexican trucks and their drivers not held to the same standards as their American counterparts, but an ongoing drug war in Mexico raises other concerns - mainly that the open access to roadways will not be reciprocated by American drivers for fear of driving into a virtual war zone. In addition, there is increasing concern that Mexican trucks could be used to smuggle illicit drugs into the country... Said Todd Spencer, executive vice president of the independent drivers association, which represents U.S. professional truckers. "U.S. trucks aren't safe south of the border, and Mexico can't assure anything in that area."...
