Truckers' strike * South Korea - Fails to gain momentum

Seoul,South Korea -The Korea Herald -14 June 2009: -- Unionized truck drivers continued their strike yesterday, but there were no major disruptions caused by the stoppage, government and industry officials said... The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs and industry officials said cargo services were operating normally at the nation's major ports and inland logistics centers across the country as of yesterday afternoon... Unionized cargo drivers have threatened that they would block traffic coming in and out of ports and inland container yards. The Korean Cargo Workers' Union which claims about 15,000 members has been demanding reinstatement of drivers who had been fired. The strike began on Thursday... On Thursday, the volume of containers coming in and out of the nation's major seaports dropped 3,400 to 48,579 TEU... A total of 46 trucks drivers at four transportation hubs - including Incheon Port and a logistic center in Uiwang in Gyeonggi Province - refused to work on the first day of the nationwide stoppage... The government does not seem to be taking the strike as seriously as strikes in previous years... But it expressed concerns over the planned strikes in Seoul today at Yeouido and the City Hall square in Gwanghwamun...
