TECHNONEWS * Europe - EU Project Evaluates Nomadic Device Benefits for Drivers

Gothenburg,Sweden -Swedish Research Council -28 May 2009: -- Participants in the European Union (EU) project TeleFOT recently met at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, to assess the first year of an initiative to provide drivers with support functions via smartphones, personal digital assistants, and personal navigators... The European Commission believes the devices could be used to provide traffic and incident information. The devices also could be used to provide the actual speed limit, as well as assist with navigation and green driving options... Led by Chalmers' Design & Human Factors group in the Department of Product and Production Development, the project will develop new methods and tools that support drivers. During the next two years, the project will conduct field tests with drivers in Greece, Italy, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Finland, and Sweden to better assess the functions and systems... Equipment will be installed in vehicles to collect data, and studies will be conducted to determine how new methods and tools would impact efficiency, mobility, environment, and safety, and whether drivers would use the functions and systems... * Technology to 'Watch Over' Vulnerable Road Users

Torino,Italy -ICT Results -18 May 2009: --
The European WATCH-OVER Project has developed a system capable of monitoring vulnerable road users (VRUs) that features a pre-crash system and a warning system. VRUs, which include pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, are more vulnerable because they do not have the safety features available in vehicles and they can emerge suddenly from unexpected places... The WATCH-OVER Project has developed a bespoke system that will prevent accidents by using sensing systems to track road users. WATCH-OVER is a cooperative system in which cars and VRUs communicate with each other to avoid collisions. The project has developed two different versions of their system--a pre-crash version that uses stereo-camera systems, and a warning system that uses a mono-camera system combined with communications technologies... The project developed a wearable device to prove the principle, and the system was tested with positive results, finding that it worked well in most urban situations.
