* Sweden - Scania to run four-day work week from June
Stockholm,Sweden -Reuters -May 15, 2009: -- Truckmaker Scania said on Friday it would introduce a four-day working week and related pay cut for 12,000 employees next month in its Swedish operations as it seeks to adjust to the plunge in market demand... Scania said in a statement the shorter working hours would last for a six-month period. The announcement came after the main workers' union at the company earlier this week agreed to the measures as a way to stave off layoffs... Rough estimate is will cut costs by 300-400 mln SEK-spox...
* USA - Volvo Sets Agreement With UAW on Mack Retirement Fund
Allentown,Pen,USA -Transport Topics -18 May 2009: -- Mack Trucks parent company Volvo AB has reached agreement with the United Auto Workers to create an independent trust responsible for the health care of Mack retirees, the Associated Press reported Monday... Volvo said it will fund the trust with $525 million in cash, which will be paid in equal installments over a five-year period... The agreement is part of a new collective bargaining agreement and requires approval by the UAW, as well as an approval order from a U.S. district court... If approved, the payments will negatively impact Volvo’s second-quarter operating income by $110 million, Bloomberg reported...
* USA - Caterpillar to Halve Hours at Engine Plant
Lafayette,Ind,USA -AP/Transport Topics -18 May 2009: -- Heavy equipment and diesel engine maker Caterpillar Inc. said it will cut hours at least in half for 985 workers in its Lafayette, Ind. plant, the Associated Press reported Monday... The company said in a state filing that the reductions at the 1,900-employee plant would begin in August and last for up to six months. The cut is the second work reduction announced this month and the third in two months for the Lafayette plant... * India - Hino Motors Coming to
Kerala,India -The Kerala On Line -18 May 2009: -- Japanese truck maker Hino Motors, part of the Toyota group, is launching its premium range of trucks in the country... Hino will initially import the truck chassis and cabin from its units in Thailand and set up manufacturing facilities once volumes pick up, a senior company official told... Globally, Toyota's marketing and sales network helps in the distribution of Hino's products. Hino Motors will, however, market the trucks in India through Japanese trading giant Marubeni, as Hino wants to have an independent set up in India...
