Trucking Industry News * USA - Schneider National to Cut Pay to Impose Furloughs

Green Bay,WI,USA -Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/IStockAnalyst, by RICK ROMELL -16 May 2009: -- More than 20,000 Schneider National Inc. employees will take pay cuts as the Green Bay trucking and logistics firm wrestles with a difficult freight environment... Schneider is eliminating holiday pay for 13,830 drivers and requiring one-week unpaid furloughs this year for 6,670 office, shop and warehouse employees, from maintenance staff to top executives... Generally speaking, trucking rises and falls with the economy, and the entire industry has suffered as the recession drags on. Earlier this week, the federal government reported that its Freight Transportation Services Index fell 3.3% from February to March. It was the largest month-to-month decline since March 2000 and brought the index to its lowest level in more than six years...

The trucking groups asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to review the Environmental Protection Agency’s approval of a waiver allowing the California Air Resources Board to begin enforcing the rule requiring emission-control retrofits on refrigerated trucks for engine model years 2001 and older beginning July 17....
