* Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana consider separate lanes for trucks on Interstate 70
Cleveland,OH,USA - Plain Dealer Reporter, by Karen Farkas -April 11, 2009: -- Truckers may one day cruise in their own lanes across central Ohio... The Buckeye State, along with Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, is considering a proposal that would separate trucks from other traffic along 800 miles of Interstate 70, an east-west corridor that runs through the four Midwestern states and is one of the busiest freight routes in the country... If built, it would be the first truck-only corridor in the country...The idea of exclusive lanes for commercial trucks is gaining traction because the belief is that they improve safety and reduce highway congestion... Across the country, only a few short stretches of highways -- including a portion of the New Jersey Turnpike -- are set aside for trucks only. But even then, they usually are in adjacent lanes or on inclines where trucks move slower than cars... As freight transport increases, truck-only toll roads may succeed, said Robin Lindsey, a professor of economics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, who researches traffic congestion and is aware of the I-70 proposal. He said researchers may want to use a computer simulation to study the proposal... SmartWay is a collaboration between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the trucking industry designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution... The carrier will reduce 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012 by improving the environmental performance of its freight operations...
