Truckers to Protest * USA - California Ports Program

Truck drivers working the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, protest the ports’ Clean Truck program and its impact on mostly Hispanic independent contractors

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -eTrucker -17 April 2009: -- A group claiming to represent truck drivers working the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach is holding a rally today, April 17, in Long Beach to protest the ports’ Clean Truck program and its impact on mostly Hispanic independent contractors... The nascent National Port Drivers Association anticipates upwards of 1,000 truck drivers will attend the gathering, said Ronald Martinez, the group’s vice president. He said the organization has attracted 400 members among people working at the ports... Martinez claimed that the ports’ program to reduce emissions by replacing older polluting trucks with new vehicles is proving a hardship for many of the owners of the older vehicles. Many have lost their livelihood because they can’t afford to make payments for the new trucks that are being offered through drayage companies that work the ports, he said. He estimated “more than 1,000 operators” have lost their work because of the program and from the weakened economy...
