Fishermen vow to extend port blockade to Euro tunnel
London,UK -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Bruce Barnard -Apr 15, 2009: -- Trucking between the UK and France risks total shutdown starting April 16 as French fishermen threatened to extend their blockade of ports to the cross channel tunnel... The warning came as truckers on both sides of the channel faced a second successive day of disruption as a flotilla of French trawlers stopped ships entering or leaving the ports of Calais, Dunkirk and Boulogne in a protest over European Union fishing quotas... The Freight Transport Association, the UK trucking lobby, has called for an overnight truck park to be set up as more vehicles converge on the motorway... The French government rejected the fishermen's demand for increased cod quotas but said it might offer extra financial support... The EU has been limiting the size of fishing catches to prevent stocks being depleted...

London,UK -The Journal of Commerce, by Bruce Barnard -Apr 16, 2009: -- French fishermen lifted their two day blockade of three northern French ports early today, April 16, freeing several hundred stranded trucks in Britain and France to board freight ferries... The fishermen, who are protesting European Union limits on cod catches, ended their action in Calais, Dunkirk and Boulogne in response to a French government offer of $5.3 million of financial aid... The fishermen's unions appear to be divided over the decision to end the blockade by a flotilla of trawlers and are due to hold further meetings which could result in fresh action...
