TOLLS * USA - Turnpike Toll Increase

Wilkes-Barre,PA,USA -MSNBC -Jan. 2, 2009: -- With the new tolls taking effect on January 4th cars will increase from 75 cents to 95 cents, while trucks will jump from $6.25 to $7.85... These hikes are only the beginning. Starting in 2010 the turnpike plans to increase tolls by 3% each year... The increases are linked to Act 44, which stipulates the Turnpike must provide $2.5 billion in supplemental transportation funding from August of 2007 to May of 2010... Turnpike officials claim that more than 90% of the toll increase will benefit non-Turnpike road and bridge projects across the state... Truckers and some others say the hikes will hurt business, the area economy and ultimately Pennsylvania consumers...

Sunday's 25-percent toll rate increase on the Pennsylvania Turnpike could stall his business and his bank account. So, Justin has decided to take a different route when he can to save money... "Every penny counts anymore and you have to do what you have to do," said Lang... But for you , that could mean a more congested drive, especially if other owners and operators are thinking the same thing; skip the turnpike and go another way...


* UTA 'Tapping' Into High-Tech Fare Collection

UT,USA -The Deseret Morning News, by Laura Hancock -29 Dec 2008: -- The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) will begin accepting credit cards and contactless payment cards to collect passenger fares starting Jan. 1. The UTA will deploy use new card readers on 520 buses and 35 TRAX and FrontRunner rail platforms. The readers use contactless chip technology to deduct fares from credit cards and also can validate prepaid cards such as electronic passes and student IDs, says UTA's Jerry Carpenter... The readers will initially deduct only single adult cash fares from credit cards, while fares for low-income people, senior citizens, and the handicapped will be incorporated into the system later in 2009...
