Lagos,Nigeria -The Punch, by Sulaiman Adenekan -2 Jan 2009: -- Two years after several port terminals in Lagos were concessioned to private operators, Port congestion is still the order of the day, making government’s target of achieving clearance of goods within 48 hours a mirage... Outdated legislation, equipment shortages, epileptic power supply, unreliable information technology infrastructure, failure to streamline the activities of security agencies and a pervasive culture of dishonesty by port users are reasons why the 48-hour cargo clearance target remain unachievable at the nation’s seaports... Investigations by our correspondent showed that terminal operators, shipping companies, importers and the Customs are all losers in the confusion that still characterise port operations in Nigeria...
