* Sweden - Scania suspends truck production for 1 month
Stockholm,Sweden -AP -3 Dec 2008: -- Swedish truckmaker Scania AB on Wednesday said it will halt its truck production in Europe for one month because of a drop in orders... Scania's spokesman Hans-Ake Danielsson said five plants and around 9,000 of Scania's 11,800 production staff will be affected by the temporary closure. The stoppage will run from Dec. 19 to Jan. 19, including public holidays... Three of the plants are in Sweden and the other two are in France and in the Netherlands...
* MAN AG to Reduce Production in Early 2009 as Truck Orders Slump
Munich,Germany -Bloomberg, by Andreas Cremer -Dec. 3, 2008: -- MAN AG, Europe’s third-largest truckmaker, will rein in commercial-vehicle production next year and shut plants for as many as 50 days during the first half of next year as the global credit crisis erodes demand... Bracing for a “very difficult” 2009, MAN plans to slash output at its main unit by 30 percent and suspend manufacturing for 40 to 50 days in the first six months, Chief Executive Officer Hakan Samuelsson said at a press dinner in Munich late yesterday...
* Ukraine - Ukrainian trucks to be built in Cuba
Miami,FL,USA -The Miami Herald/Cuban Colada, by Renato Pérez Pizarro-3 Dec 2008: -- Ukrainian truck manufacturer Autokraz on Tuesday announced it has signed an agreement with Cuba to set up an assembly line in Cienfuegos for its vehicles... A press release from the company said that it has sold more than 200 dump trucks and concrete-mixing trucks to Cuba since December 2007 and that this contract turns the relationship into a "systems operation"... Autokraz will begin by repairing more than 10,000 Kraz vehicles that have been circulating in Cuba since 1961; it will then create an assembly line for Kraz trucks and other vehicles in an existing factory in Cienfuegos. The company says it did US$17 million worth of business with Cuba in 2008, adding proudly that that amount approximates the total trade between Ukraine and Cuba in 2007 -- $20 million...Based in Kremenchuk, Autokraz manufactures heavy and mammoth trucks for civilian and military use. Kraz is an acronym for Kremenchuk Automotive Works...
* USA - Meritor WABCO Debuts System for Automatic Truck Braking
Atlanta,GA,USA -Transport Topics, by Frederick Kiel -Dec. 1, 2008: -- Meritor WABCO demonstrated its new automatic braking system for heavy-duty trucks that is integrated with its anti-lock braking and stability control systems. Executives said the system can cut accident rates, especially rear-end collisions, which account for nearly 20% of all truck-involved crashes... Meritor WABCO’s OnGuard automatic braking system, which it first demonstrated in February and put into manufacturer’s specs in the third quarter, uses a radar system to see moving objects up to 500 feet in front of the truck... If the computer-radar system detects that the truck is approaching too close to the vehicle ahead, it alerts the driver with sound alarms and blinking lights and can automatically engage the throttle, engine brake and foundation brakes, the latter up to one-third of their power, on its own...
* India - Rocky Road For Tata Motors
New York,NY,USA -Forbes, by Vidya Ram -2 Dec 2008: -- If you thought India might escape the crisis hitting the global auto industry, think again. The country's most famous auto maker, Tata Motors, is struggling. Tata announced late on Monday that sales of its cars and trucks fell by 30.0% in November, from last year... Truck sales were hit hard, with sales falling 40.0% during the month, while car sales fell 12.0%. There was also less demand for Tata's vehicles abroad, with exports dipping 22.0% to 27,741 in November...
