Higher Truck Fees * USA - Threaten Toledo port
Some fear increase of 3,536% will send business to Detroit
Toledo,OH,USA -The Toledo Blade, by LARRY P. VELLEQUETTE -9 Nov 2008: -- ... Farmers, truckers, independent businessmen - all patiently wait their turn to deposit their loads, collect their checks, and start the roundtrip from Michigan to the bustling Port of Toledo all over again... But an administrative change enacted last month by the Ohio Department of Transportation threatens to dim what has been a bright spot on an otherwise bleak regional economic landscape... ODOT - seeing its gasoline tax revenues declining dramatically as people travel less and drive more fuel-efficient vehicles - has set its sights on large trucks to make up part of the shortfall... It notified truckers last month that it had raised permit fees for vehicles heavier than the state's standard 40 tons from the traditional $55 a year to $500 a quarter, an increase of 3,536 percent in 10 months... A 3,536% fee increase for trucks over 40 tons enacted by ODOT has Port of Toledo officials fearing transportation business will leave the area, choosing Detroit instead)
