TRUCKING INDUSTRY NEWS * UK - Stobart says trucking volumes holding up

Stobart, the trucking company that has spawned a fan club, said it was seeing no signs of any fall in volumes in the current downturn as it delivered a maiden first-half profit of £11m pre-tax

London,UK -The Telegraph, by by Alistair Osborne -23 Oct 2008: -- Andrew Tinkler, chief executive, said the current market was made for Stobart's "pay-as-you-go" model, where customers do not retain a fleet of trucks in their own livery but buy in the capacity required... "If you want 100 loads tomorrow, you get 100. If you want 50, you get 50," Mr Tinkler said, adding that Stobart was winning business from customers unhappy at having drivers standing around without work when volumes dry up... Stobart diverts trucks to the next nearest job, so minimising empty miles, with fleet utilisation up from 82.1pc to 83.9pc over the period... Rival haulier yesterday said it was acquiring two Koblenz-based warehousing and transport businesses, ELI-Transport and ELI-Lagerhaus for up to €15m (£11.9m) to extend its network in Germany...
