TRAFFIC LIGHTS * UK - Every Traffic Light in London to Be Re-programmed in Drive to Cut Jams
London,Uk -The London Daily Mail, by David Williams -16 Oct 2008: -- London Mayor Boris Johnson has made the re-programming of traffic lights in London a top priority in his administration in a bid to alleviate traffic congestion while maintaining pedestrian safety. Former mayor Ken Livingstone has been accused of programming lights during his term to purposefully slow down traffic as part of his effort to increase use of mass transit. Commissioner of Transport for London Peter Hendy says that the re-timings could be achieved without impacting pedestrian safety and that re-timings at about 150 of the city's "most important signals" had already taken place, providing "significant extra capacity"... The re-programming will create "green waves" that will allow drivers to move more smoothly through city streets if they obey the speed limit...
