* California - Congested L.A. traffic hurting job growth, new survey says
--- Los Angeles’ infamous transportation problems are not only major annoyances, they may also be detrimental to regional job growth, according to findings of a new, Los Angeles County Business Federation (BizFed) survey... Employers named transportation as one of their top business concerns, second only to taxes and fees... Among 22 categories examined, transportation maintained its four-year upward trajectory on the list of top concerns, moving to the No. 2 spot in 2016 from the No. 4 spot in 2015. In 2013, transportation ranked as the No. 10 concern of employers...

* Texas - Congestion Costs Trucking $27 Billion Annually, Report Says

College Station,TXS,USA -The Washington Post/AP/Fleet Owner -5 Feb 2013: -- Traffic congestion in the largest U.S. cities cost the commercial trucking industry about $27 billion in wasted time and fuel in 2011, according to a report released Tuesday... Congestion cost the total economy $121 billion in wasted time and fuel in 2011, up $1 billion from a year earlier, according to the Texas A and M Transportation Institute’s Urban Mobility Report... Americans wasted an average of $818 each sitting in traffic in 2011... Along with wasted time and fuel, congestion contributed 56 billion pounds of additional carbon dioxide emissions from vehicle idling... The Washington, D.C., area had the worst congestion, the report said. Following that were Los Angeles, San Francisco-Oakland, New York-Newark, Boston, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia and Seattle... The study said Americans burned 2.9 billion gallons of gasoline while sitting in congestion in 2011, a slight improvement over the peak in 2005, when commuters wasted 3.2 billion gallons...

London,EN,UK -Transport Engineer -7 Jan 2013: -- As 2012 drew to a close, the Centre for Economics and Business Research, along with traffic information firm Inrix, published a survey that put shocking scale on the cost of congestion to the UK... It revealed that the economy suffers to the tune of more than £4.3 billion per year, in terms of wasted time and fuel. Delays specifically to business and freight vehicles cost some £1.1 billion every year, at today's prices, with over £426 million wasted on fuel, because of traffic, it suggested...

CONGESTED HIGHWAYS * USA - Traffic gridlock hits bottom; climbing back up

Less time stuck on congested highways for truckers and commuters

Kirkland,WASH,USA -Today's Trucking (CAN) -2 Sept 2009: ... According to a National Traffic Scorecard report by Inrix -- a provider of traffic and navigation services in North America -- traffic congestion across the U.S. is on the rise after bottoming out in the second quarter... Signs of economic recovery, new stimulus-funded highway construction projects and lower fuel prices are all contributing to the rise... Inrix found that 64 of the top 100 most populated cities in the U.S. had increased traffic congestion levels at the beginning of this year... The company also said its freight corridor analysis showed the need for a national freight strategy... According to the scorecard, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago were ranked the worst traffic bottlenecks in the country, with the westbound side of the Cross Bronx Expressway in New York the worst... Inrix also analyzed commercial freight traffic concentration, and found that while the nation's busiest long haul freight roadways cut across 28 states, more than 95 percent of this mileage comes from just 10 states, including Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee and Texas. There appeared to be more long haul freight usage on roads in the middle of the country that serve as thoroughfares, such as I-40, I-75, I-81 and I-35...

Terrible Tailbacks * Bangladesh - Make life miserable in old Dhaka

For the thousands of commuters in old Dhaka, moving from one place to another within and out of the region is a bane

Dhaka,Bangladesh -The Daily Star, by Rizanuzzaman Laskar -3 Dec 2008: -- ... They lose several hours a day for tailbacks. "Transport condition is terrible here," lamented Md Mahbubur Rahman, a teacher at the European Standard School in old town... Like Mahbub and Anwar, anyone would agree that Dhaka's old part, best recognised for its antiquated buildings, time-honoured cuisine and ever-friendly residents, is also notorious for its gallingly narrow streets and slapdash traffic congestions... The roads are so narrow that two cars cannot pass at a time. Rows of shops and makeshift hotels dotted the streets, further narrowing them... The markets and bazaars in old town offer no parking facilities, resulting in unwarranted traffic jams. The roads are bumpy, potholed and broken. Many manholes are open with the odd vehicle or two getting their wheel stuck inside them, inviting even more jams... The few traffic enforcers who are supposed to be maintaining a smooth flow of traffic are usually found dozing off or mingling with their colleagues, old town residents alleged... TRAFFIC LIGHTS * UK - Every Traffic Light in London to Be Re-programmed in Drive to Cut Jams

London,Uk -The London Daily Mail, by David Williams -16 Oct 2008: -- London Mayor Boris Johnson has made the re-programming of traffic lights in London a top priority in his administration in a bid to alleviate traffic congestion while maintaining pedestrian safety. Former mayor Ken Livingstone has been accused of programming lights during his term to purposefully slow down traffic as part of his effort to increase use of mass transit. Commissioner of Transport for London Peter Hendy says that the re-timings could be achieved without impacting pedestrian safety and that re-timings at about 150 of the city's "most important signals" had already taken place, providing "significant extra capacity"... The re-programming will create "green waves" that will allow drivers to move more smoothly through city streets if they obey the speed limit... CONGESTIONS * India - Ore Trucks Continue to Batter Roads Despite Police Order

Panambur, a place which used to be one of the highlights of the city for its port, factories and the industrial area nearby, off late has been in limelight for all the wrong reasons

Mangalore,GA,India -Prajwal Ukkudafor Daijiworld Media Network/Daijiworld.com, by Abrar Khar (PICTURE/CRONICS') -Jul 21, 2008: --...It gained international fame with its snail pace highway road construction and pathetic potholes, not too long ago (the construction is still 'in the process')...The public had enough problems plying on this so called highway dealing with huge potholes and kilos of dust entering their lungs...And to rub salt on wounds, we now witness a long queue of mine laden trucks being parked alongside the road, causing hindrance to the already struggling vehicular movement on this road... The queue of these trucks is spread from Kulur to Suratkal, almost covering a distance of an awful ten kilometer stretch...Road blocks are a common sight here, making life difficult not just for the general public to ply smoothly, but also for the policemen who are deputed in the area precisely for maintaining even vehicular movement...The kind of job that these cops are assigned, no wonder they lose their cool, thereby providing many with their stick music...Mangalore SP N Satheesh Kumar recently issued an order to vacate the trucks from the area. However, the order doesn't seem to have been implemented. The trucks continue to occupy most part of the road...The truck drivers though grumble that if they are given a proper place for parking, they will not park their trucks on this road..."Yes, we have been told that we have to vacate this place, but we are not told where we have to go. If they give a proper place for parking, preferably some 30 kilometers away from the city, it would be good for us" says a truck driver from Chitradurga...It has been quite some time now that Mangaloreans try to avoid the Panambur-Suratkal road for all the troubles it has to offer and the new dimension of truck parking to the already existing road problems, are not doing the public any better either...Apart from wastage of time, the polluted atmosphere that the people have to encounter in this region is also a cause of concern... In spite of the order given by the District SP, the trucks continue to trouble traffic with their passive movement on the Kulur-Suratkal stretch...Why is that the order has not translated into immediate action? Why haven't the authorities acted upon? Well, the state politics has been seeing quite a humpty-dumpty ride off late... The Padmapriya incident not withstanding, is this another such case where the state government is playing hide and seek with the people? The earlier these questions are answered, the better it will be for the state...

HEAVY TOLL: Most freeway traffic is running smoothly, but this would be small comfort for drivers stuck in a slow moving, 4km mess inside the Hsuehshan Tunnel

Taipei,Taiwan -The Taipei Times, by JENNY W. HSU -Feb 10, 2008: -- An estimated 2.6 million vehicles hit the road yesterday, making it the busiest day of the Lunar New Year holiday, the National Freeway Bureau said, urging the public to use public transport... The bureau said that yesterday and today were expected to be peak travel days because most people would be heading back to work tomorrow after the Lunar New Year break... A slow-moving, 4km line of cars was reported inside the Hsuehshan Tunnel for several hours as travelers headed north from Ilan County... Vehicles were reported to be moving as slowly as 20kph on several sections of freeway... The freeways will be toll-free at these times... Peak-hour Ban * Dubai - Motorists stick to slow track as trucks defy

Heavy trucks continue to ply Sharjah roads during peak hours despite a ban, causing a major setback to motorists

Drivers of heavy vehicles weighing 2.5 tonnes or more were ordered to stay off Sharjah roads during peak hours or face stiff penalties.... Not every truck needs to pass through the city streets, as a few among them have had no choice but to go on the city streets because they have to pick up or offload their goods either from the Sharjah ports or the industrial areas... Congestion * UK - FQP calls for a cut in van in London

Van operations in the centre of London must come under increasing scrutiny in order to cut congestion according to a report from the Central London Freight Quality Partnership (FQP)

London,UK -Motor Transport/Road Transport -25 July 2007: -- It says that van use has proliferated in recent years for a variety of reasons... A separate survey carried out by TfL (Transport for London) in four London Boroughs - Croydon, Lewisham, Southwark and Westminster - found that the majority of van users did not use or were not aware of material relating to 'best practice' for freight transport. Nor did the majority provide driver training... The survey has led to a series of TfL project recommendations under the London Freight Plan, currently in its draft stage...
