Sydney,Australia -Freightscene.com, by Findlay Osborn -24 Sept 2008: -- The truck transport industry in Australia is one industry in Australia that faces crisis... With the industry already suffering from low margins and high costs associated with the price of diesel fuel, moves by the Federal Labor Government to increase the diesel fuel excise and other charges are ultimately considered untimely and unwelcome... Addressing the Parliament of Australia on the issue, Federal Liberal MP for Forrest, Nola Marino, criticised the Government for wanting to place additional pressure on the truck transport industry... A decision by the Rudd Government to increase the diesel fuel excise was, according to Ms Marino, "yet another round of inflationary tax rises," from the government... Since 2001, Australia’s diesel excise has been fixed at 38.143 cents per litre, however in February the Federal Minister for Transport, the Hon Anthony Albanese announced a 1.367 cent per litre increase to the levy, as well as indicating that the excise would return to being indexed from next year...
