Inspectors * USA & Canada - Many trucks on Avon Mountain still loaded with risk

Avon,CT,USA -The Avon Post, by Lisa Backus -10 Sept 2008: -- When Officer Susan Kassey stopped a tractor-trailer a few weeks ago on Route 44 in front of her police department, she made a discovery that she said shouldn't surprise her, but often does... "He had signed off on the repair slip that the truck wasn't fit for service and had no rear brakes. He just took off anyway," Kassey said of the tractor-trailer's driver. "I don't know why it surprises me when I come across this, but it always does. This is what we're driving with on the roads every day. This is what I see every day"... Kassey is the state's only female municipal police officer federally trained in truck inspections... Kassey said Thursday that fully half the trucks she inspects throughout town must be pulled off the road due to serious driver or equipment violations...

* Canada - Road side blitz finds 13 of 30 trucks checked unsafe

Vancouver,BC,CAN -The Vancouver Sun, by Chantal Eustace -September 12, 2008: -- Before Gord Foster gets inside the 10-wheeler truck he drives to Bellingham daily, the father of three said, he does a full vehicle inspection... But despite widespread public scrutiny, not every commercial truck driver is taking safety seriously... Nearly half the commercial trucks inspected at a West Vancouver roadside blitz Wednesday were ordered off the road for defects that, police said, should have been detected during the pre-trip inspection... Some of the trucks didn't have brake fluid. Some had bald tires or tires with loose nuts. Others were considered overloaded... Foster said these drivers put everyone in danger, including other truck drivers... (Photograph by Mark van Manen/Vancouver Sun -Inspectors check out a truck in West Vancouver)
