USA -Truckingboards Truck Drivers Forum -20 Aug 2008: -- Deregulation of the trucking industry in the form of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 caused increased competition in the Less than a TruckLoad (LTL) industry... Non-union carriers quickly began taking advantage of their lower labor costs to gain market share... Most of the companies above were union carriers who were unable to compete, though a few were non-union carriers... The trend seems destined to continue until the LTL market is entirely composed of low cost non-union carriers...


* Johnson plans to close trucking business

Louisville, KY,USA -The Business First of Louisville/San Antonio Business Journal (San Antonio,TX,USA) -August 18, 2008: -- On the heels of an $8.3 million lawsuit, a prominent Louisville businessman plans to close his trucking business... In a media advisory sent out Monday, Charlie Johnson, chairman and CEO of C.W. Johnson Xpress LLC, said he planned to hold a press conference tomorrow morning to discuss the closing of his business... On Aug. 12, the Branch Banking and Trust Co. sued Johnson, his company and other potential creditors of the company for $8.3 million that it says Johnson and/or the company owes on unpaid loans... According to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Louisville, the bank wants a restraining order issued against the company, preventing it from getting rid of the tractors/trailers that it owns and instead gathering them together at its terminal facilities on Cane Run Road...
