TRUCKING PLANS * USA - Direct to Dagsboro

Impetus behind a shipping, storage and distribution enterprise opening this year to small businesses serving the rural Eastern Shore market

Dagsboro,MD,USA -The Delmarva Now (Salisbury,MD), by Deborah Gates -10 Aug 2008: -- ... LatCoop Cooperative will ship products in bulk from Mexico and points southwest to a center opening in Dagsboro for affordable wholesale and retail distribution across the Delmarva Peninsula, said Miguel Gutierrez, owner of Fiesta-Mex restaurant and grocery store and a principal in the first known cooperative specializing in Latin foods and products in the region... Co-op membership would be a financial benefit and convenience for small-business people serving Hispanic niche markets, although anyone could join the venture opening to customers in October, Gutierrez said. Buying from a regional distribution base holds down wholesale and retail costs by as much as five times and introduces the marketplace to ethnic products that aren't found locally, he also said... The Rural Development Center at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is preparing a LatCoop marketing study and lending financial support toward legal advise, said Daniel Kuennen, center director and UMES special assistant to the president for University Outreach and Community Engagement... Also supporting the venture are the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the University of Delaware that is developing a cooperative small-business plan, Kuennen said... Gutierrez hopes to build a trucking fleet and wants to move products with few to no transfers... LatCoop intends to route its trucks more directly than those that typically travel due north to North Dakota or Minnesota to due east to New York or New England and then on to communities along the Eastern Seaboard.
It is unclear whether an extension of a federal long-haul trucking initiative would impact the cooperative's transportation program...
