FedEx driver in Parsippany heads to 'Super Bowl of Safety'
Parsippany, NJ,USA -The Daily Record, by Meghan Van Dyk -August 10, 2008: -- In his 28 years as a professional truck driver, Kevin Wilkening has seen it all -- drivers talking on cell phones, applying make-up, shaving and even typing on laptops. But distracted drivers are just one of the obstacles the 47-year-old faces everyday in his big rig... "There's no time for a break," Wilkening said. "You've got to be alert at all times, watching mirrors, making sure there is enough time to brake, enough room to turn. Truck drivers are held to a higher standard -- there's no room for error"... So far, the Washington Township resident has been lucky on the road, accumulating more than 750,000 accident-free miles working for Parsippany-based FedEx National LTL over the past 11 years... In July, Wilkening not only won the 4-Axle title at the state Truck Driving Championship, he was also named the state's Rookie of the Year for receiving the top score among all first-year competitors... He is now headed to the National Truck Driving Championships in Houston on Aug. 20 to compete against 400 of the best drivers in the country...
