SUGGESTIONS * USA - ATA presents, to control fuel costs

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) made an appeal to Congress, to implement a number of measures aimed at ensuring an affordable fuel supply for the trucking industry and US consumers

Washington,DC,USA -Truck News (CAN) -14 July 2008: -- ... One of the ATA's suggestions is for the US government to more closely monitor "excessive speculation" which the group says is "contributing to the rapid increase in the price of oil"... The association's other suggestions include: establishing a national diesel fuel standard; allowing for the environmentally-responsible exploration of oil-rich areas in the US; allowing oil companies to tap into the vast resources of crude resources in oil shale and tar sands in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah; continuing to fund the EPA SmartWay program; limiting truck speeds to 68 mph through speed limiter legislation; setting a national speed limit of 65 mph; requiring states to grant a weight exemption for APUs; and suspending collection of the 12% federal excise tax on fuel purchased by carriers to operate APUs...


* Bush Lifts Executive Ban on Offshore Oil Drilling - Move Would Still Need Congressional Approval

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topìcs -14 July 2008: -- President Bush Monday lifted an executive order banning offshore oil drilling, but the move still needs congressional action to take effect... The president called on Congress to repeal a 1981 law banning additional offshore drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf... “The executive ranch’s restrictions have been cleared away,” Bush said, calling on Congress to act on allowing more domestic oil exploration as a means to boost supply and reduce prices... The president also called on Congress to allow drilling in prohibited sections of Alaska and to boost oil shale development and U.S. refining capacity, he said in a brief televised statement...
