TRUCKING INDUSTRY NEWS * Australia - Truck industry under pressure
The price of diesel is hurting trucking companies who are trying not to pass on the costs to their clients
Dubbo,New South Wales,Australia -The Dubbo Daily Liberal, by LYNTON GRACE -14 July 2008: -- General manager of Dubbo-based Robert Holmes Transport, Bruce Lockie, said his business was “fuel dependent”... “Without fuel, we might as well park the trucks in the yard and lock the gate,” he said... The highest price of diesel was just under $2 a litre in Dubbo yesterday, and averaged 190.6 cents a litre on Thursday... The high cost of fuel and the impact of the drought - which has seen a drop in the amount of product required to be trucked to Sydney - has been a double whammy on trucking companies... Mr Lockie said big companies such as Robert Holmes can swallow the impact, but smaller operators will find it very tough... The cost of diesel kicked-in in about January, but really rose and began to hurt in March, he said... The drought is impacting equally as the price of fuel on the industry... “We are so dependent on the rural industry in Dubbo - there’s no other industry such as minerals, to take over from agriculture.”...
