TECHNONEWS * USA - Five Cities Test High-Tech 911 System

Call centers in five U.S. cities are testing the Next Generation 9-1-1 system developed by the Department of Transportation (DOT)

USA -USA Today/ISA by Sabrina Quirarte -10 July 2008: -- The aim is to enable police and other emergency workers to communicate via text messaging, quickly locate the site of cell phone callers, and reroute calls to busy call centers to backup centers... Linda Dodge, public safety coordinator with DOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems' joint program office, observes that, "Communication devices and systems are advancing rapidly. We need to be sure emergency communications are able to evolve at the same time"... The system was installed in June in the cities of Rochester, N.Y; Bozeman, Mont.; King County, Wash.; St. Paul, Minn.; and Fort Wayne, Ind. It is intended as a replacement for the existing decades-old technology now used by the country's 911 call centers, which number more than 6,000...

"Today, your wife gives you advice while you drive," he told Biz Insider. "Tomorrow, it will be these sensors."...
