FREIGHT INDUSTRY CRISIS * Australia - Fuel costs threaten economy
Steve Shearer, of Road Transport Association, warns spiralling fuel costs are a threat to survival
Sydney,Australia -ABC News -Jul 9, 2008: -- A road transport industry body says so many companies will have left the sector by the end of the year that freight costs will as much as quadruple... Steve Shearer, from the Road Transport Association, says some operators are imposing a levy of up to 25 per cent on their services to offset the rising price of fuel... He says trucking companies are closing at a rapid rate, because fuel costs have risen by 40 per cent since last September... Mr Shearer says governments could help spread the message to business about why freight companies are charging more, or will have to deal with the economic collapse that follows... "If government stands next to us and says 'Look' to the business community 'this really is a serious issue and if we don't all start taking a long-term view then there won't be a truck industry'... By the end of this year without doubt there will be so many transport companies that have gone broke and out of business that the ones who are left will be charging three to four times as much because they can and that means that the cost for all sorts of things will be skyrocketing."... *ATA recommends: Passing fuel cost hikes on to customers
Sydney,NSW,Australia -Materials Handling -9 July 2008: -- The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) is urging the trucking industry to prepare itself for the economic impact likely to result from the emissions trading scheme... The draft report for the Garnaut Climate Change review recommended for transport and fuel to be included in the scheme. If this is adopted, 2010 will see further increases in the price of diesel, by up to ten cents per litre... According to the ATA, including the transport sector in the scheme was better than more regulation... It claims emissions trading will allow more flexibility for the trucking companies and customers to make their own decisions on how to deal with the increased price of fuel... One solution being touted by the association is for the industry to pass the increased costs of fuel on to customers...
* Truckies feel pressure of petrol prices
Illawarra,Australia -The Illawara Mercury, by NIAMH CHAMPION -11 July 2008: -- The trucking industry has hit crisis point and many businesses face going under, the Australian Trucking Association warned yesterday... With petrol prices continuing to rocket, and the cost of diesel nearing $2 per litre, Australian Trucking Association (ATA) spokesman Bill McKinley said the road transport industry, including operators in the Illawarra, was feeling the pinch... Mr McKinley said diesel was a major expense for trucking companies and many businesses were absorbing the 50 cent increase... Truck driver and Kotevski Transport owner Tony Kotevski said the Rudd Government should look at long-term solutions to the fuel crisis... The ATA said transportation businesses may have to increase charges by 20 per cent just to make up the lost ground from months of increasing fuel prices... Estimates were that emissions trading, set to begin in 2010, would add another 10 cents a litre to the cost of diesel and consumers would have to foot the bill again, Mr McKinley said...
