London,UK -The Telegraph, by Jonathan Sibun -18 June 2008: -- The UK's biggest food and drink companies, from Coca-Cola to Tesco, have clubbed together to share transport in a ground-breaking move forecast to take 800 lorries off Britain's roads this year... The initiative, in response to rocketing UK fuel costs and a growing focus from consumers on the environmental impact of transporting food, has been backed by 37 of the UK's biggest high street names. Those involved include Britain's biggest supermarkets, from Asda to Waitrose, drinks company Pepsi and brewer Coors, food suppliers from Northern Foods to Nestlé, and consumer goods giant Unilever. An estimated 48m road miles and 23m litres of diesel fuel will be saved through the scheme, cutting £30m of costs at today's prices. The companies will also save on haulage, warehousing and vehicle maintenance costs...
