* Truckers protest fuel prices nationwide
USA - eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -4 April 2008: -- An April 1 shutdown did take place for some owner-operators, who in spots across the country parked their trucks or slowed highway traffic in protest of diesel prices... There had been talk on the CBs and Internet of a nationwide April 1 strike, but other dates later in the month were also mentioned. With diesel just under or over $4 per gallon nationwide, some owner-operators clearly decided to shut down, but it is unclear how many and for how long. No single organization seems to be in charge, and the specific goals, other than protest, are unclear... Near Florida’s Port of Tampa, more than 50 trucks parked in protest. About 25 truckers parked along Expressway 83 in Alamo, Texas. About 30 truckers gathered outside Jackson, Miss., for a convoy to Atlanta... Some truckers demonstrated by simply slowing down. On the New Jersey Turnpike, trucks clogged lanes at slow speeds, while another group of truckers rallied outside the Vince Lombardi Service Area in Ridgefield, near the George Washington Bridge. Trucks also slowed traffic on the Stevenson Expressway in Chicago... Also April 1, coincidentally, the U.S. House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming had representatives from the five largest oil companies at a hearing to probe the causes and solutions of U.S. oil dependence...

* Gas Prices Got You Down? Just Think of the Truckers…
Stamford,CT,USA -DanMalloy.com, by MICHAEL NORRIS -April 4, 2008: -- This week, a story from WTNH caught my attention; it was about the truckers who were planning to protest the high price of diesel fuel. The article also mentions a AAA study which showed diesel prices in Connecticut averaged $4.24 a gallon, up from $2.91 a gallon a year ago. Truckers were planning on parking their trucks or driving very slow on the highways; the latter if we’re all lucky... Something’s not right when people who drive thousands of miles per year to make sure we all have everything we need are being driven into the ground financially. We owe it to the truckers to look for answers or we could soon be looking at empty shelves at the grocery store...
* Protests spread as fuel crisis pushes owner-operators to brink
Grain Valley,MO,USA -Land Line Magazine -April 4, 2008: -- Across the country this week, some owner-operators decided to shut down for one day, some decided to shut down for three days, and others decided to shut down indefinitely until economic conditions in the trucking industry improve... Fuel prices near or above the $4 mark in many states and shrinking bottom lines have forced many owner-operators to re-examine whether or not it’s economically feasible for them to keep rolling right now...
* Weekend May Tell Truckers' Strike Impact
Dublin,GA,USA -The Dublin Courier Herald, by Stephanie Miller & Jonathan Jackson -4 April 2008: -- According to those who depend on the business of over-the-road truck drivers, a difference can already be seen in the dollars taken in from since a nationwide voluntary hauling strike of independent truckers began Thursday... And, some local truckers have what they believe to be a bargaining tool to convince those who hire them to haul to raise their rates... Mindy Long of the National Association of Truck stop Operators (NATSO) said Friday that the rise in fuel prices is challenging for truck stop owners and operators...
